Local Control, Remote Reach: How a New Kingston Law Firm Went Hybrid Without Giving Up Its Desk Phones

A firm that could not simply move to the cloud

Hartley Chambers is a mid-sized practice in New Kingston. Its attorneys rely on SIP desk phones with call recording, and the firm has strict reasons to keep close, local control of how calls are handled: client confidentiality, records that stay in-house, and routing rules the office manages directly. A blanket move to a hosted system, with the call-handling brain sitting entirely off-site, was not something the partners were comfortable with.

But the practice had also changed. Two attorneys now work partly from home, others travel to court, and the firm wanted every lawyer reachable on the main number wherever they were, without publishing personal mobiles and without losing the local control the partners insisted on.

Why hybrid was the right compromise

A hybrid phone system let Hartley Chambers keep the on-premise PBX, and therefore local control of routing and recording, while using the WOCOM cloud only for what it needed the cloud for: reaching attorneys who are not in the building. Nothing about the in-office call flow had to be surrendered to get remote reach.

How the setup works

  • Local control retained. The on-site PBX continues to run internal routing, the firm's IVR menu and call handling over the LAN, exactly as the partners want it.
  • Remote attorneys on softphones. Lawyers working from home or on the road use WOCOM softphones and the mobile app, appearing on the firm number and reachable at their usual extension.
  • Business continuity. If the office link goes down, the cloud reroutes incoming calls to mobiles and softphones, so the firm never goes dark.
  • Cost control. Cloud SIP trunks replaced the firm's traditional lines, trimming call costs, especially on long-distance calls to clients overseas.

The results

  • Every attorney reachable on the firm extension, whether in the office, at home or at court.
  • Routing, recording and the IVR stayed under the firm's own local control, with no compromise on confidentiality.
  • Incoming calls kept flowing during an office internet outage, rerouted to mobiles automatically.
  • Lower monthly line costs after moving outside calling to SIP trunks.

Control and mobility are not a trade-off

Firms that value local control are often told their only modern option is to hand the whole system to a hosted provider. Hybrid says otherwise. You keep the on-premise control your practice depends on and add cloud mobility precisely where you need it.
