SIP Trunking in Jamaica: Keep Your Phone System, Leave the Copper

SIP trunking replaces the physical lines feeding your existing phone system with a connection over the internet. Your PBX stays. Your handsets stay. Your numbers stay. What changes is what those lines cost and how quickly their capacity can move.

It suits businesses with a phone system they are not ready to replace. If you are replacing the system anyway, Cloud PBX is usually the better route.

What changes on the bill

Traditional lines are charged per line per month regardless of use. Channels are sized to your actual simultaneous calls, which for most businesses is far fewer than the number of lines they have — a twenty-person office rarely exceeds six calls at once. Capacity planning covers how to size it from your own call records rather than by guesswork.

What changes operationally

  • Capacity moves the same day rather than on a lead time, up for a seasonal peak and down again afterwards.
  • Numbers become configuration — 876, US and Canadian numbers on the same trunk, routed where you want them.
  • Failover becomes possible. A cut copper line stays cut; a trunk that loses its connection can reroute to mobiles or a second site in seconds, if you configure it.

Will it work with my PBX?

Most systems made in the last decade speak SIP natively. Older TDM systems connect through a gateway, and genuinely legacy equipment may be at the point where replacement costs less than keeping it. A compatibility check answers this in a phone call rather than a project.

The question worth asking a provider

SIP trunking looks like a commodity and is not one. The difference shows when a call breaks up on a Tuesday afternoon: can the company you pay look at the call in progress, or can they only pass a message to whoever actually runs the network? That is the SIP-native carrier distinction, and it is worth settling before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many channels do I need?

One per simultaneous call. Pull a month of call records and look at the peak — it is almost always lower than expected.

Do I have to replace my phone system?

No. That is the point of trunking. A gateway covers older systems that do not speak SIP.

Can I keep my numbers?

Yes, and you can add 876, US and Canadian numbers alongside them.

What happens if the internet fails?

With failover configured, calls reroute automatically. Without it, they do not — the plan matters more than the trunk.
