Build Your Career With WOCOM: Get Certified, Then Apply From Inside the Academy

Written by Everett Kildare · Aug 16, 2026 · 7 min read

Most job hunting in this country runs through the same narrow door. You send a CV to an address you found online, it lands in a folder with three hundred others, and you hear nothing — not because the CV was bad, but because nobody on the other side has any way of knowing whether you can actually do the work.

WOCOM hires differently. We hire from our own certified pool. If you can prove you understand the network, the phone system and the portal our customers run their businesses on, the door opens — and the proof is free to earn, from anywhere in Jamaica, on your own schedule.

This is how it works, end to end.

The route in is the training, not the inbox

WOCOM Academy is our certification programme. It is free, it is open to anyone, and it was not built as a marketing exercise — it is the same material our own engineers, partners and support staff are certified against. Every lesson is narrated, most are built around animated walkthroughs of the real WOCOM Hub portal rather than slides about it, and your progress is saved so you can study across as many sittings as you need.

Finish it and you hold a certificate with a verification code anyone can check. Inside the Academy, that certificate is also a key: it unlocks the careers page, where applications go straight to our hiring team with your certificate number attached. There is no separate application route, because the qualification is the assessment we would otherwise have to put you through.

What the training actually involves

Two levels, in order. Nobody is dropped in at the deep end.

Basic Certification is the foundation: six modules and twenty-four lessons — roughly eighty minutes of material — covering the network, the cloud phone system, the devices, SIP trunking, the AI receptionist and the contact centre. It closes with a timed exam: twenty questions, forty-five minutes, 75% to pass. The certificate is valid for two years, and you get one attempt a month, pass or fail, so it is worth doing the modules properly before you sit it.

Advanced Certification is the working qualification, and Basic is a prerequisite for it. Nine modules and forty-five lessons — close to four hours — take the WOCOM Hub apart screen by screen: the dashboard, extensions and departments, the routing canvas, live call monitoring, WOCOM AI and call scoring, reporting, and the voice engineering underneath it all — SIP, codecs, concurrency and call quality.

The assessment is deliberately harder than a quiz. There are written sections sat in the browser, and an observed practical on a test tenant, marked by a human assessor rather than a script. Eighty marks out of a hundred is a pass. A candidate who writes beautifully but cannot build a working ring group has not passed — that is the point of the practical, and it is also why the certificate means something to an employer.

What unlocks when you pass

Hold the Advanced certificate and the Careers tab inside the Academy comes alive. Until then you can see it, read every role in full and know exactly what you are working towards — nothing is hidden behind the lock. What changes on certification is that the apply button becomes live.

Applying takes a minute. You pick the role, say when you are available and write a few lines about yourself. Your name, your certificate number, your score and your issue date travel with the application automatically, so the hiring team can verify your credential against the register before they even reply. No attachments, no chasing anyone for a reference to prove you sat the exam.

The roles open to certified learners

Five, listed as separate tabs on the careers page:

  • Field & Support Internship — 90-day placement. Time across the install and support teams: site surveys, handset provisioning, live cut-overs and shifts on the support desk. Built for someone starting out who learns by doing.
  • Telephone Support Agent. First line for customers on the phone and in the portal — log the fault accurately, triage between customer network, handset and platform, resolve what you can, hand over cleanly what you cannot.
  • Support Field Engineer. The faults that cannot be settled from the desk. Cabling, power, network, handsets, and proving the fix with the customer before you leave site.
  • Installation Department. New sites from survey to live: racking and cabling, provisioning handsets, cut-over on the day, and showing the staff how to use what you have just installed.
  • SIP Engineer Support. The voice layer — trunks, routing, codecs, concurrency and call quality — and the escalations that arrive when a call is failing for a reason nobody can see from the surface.

Be clear-eyed about what an application is: roles open as they become available, and applying is not a guarantee of an interview. What certification changes is that you are applying from inside the pool we hire from, with a qualification we set, already verified.

Who this actually suits

The people who do well here are not always the ones with the longest CV. They are school leavers with a technical bent and no route in. Customer service people who are good with callers and want a trade behind it. IT technicians who have been doing networks quietly for years without a certificate to show for it. People who taught themselves and have never had anybody test them properly.

Telecommunications rewards that kind of person, because the work is diagnosable. A call either connects or it does not, and the reason is findable. If you like finding the reason, you will like this work.

Why we hire this way

Because of what we promise customers. WOCOM is Jamaican owned and licensed as a carrier, which means the person who answers a fault call can see the call rather than raise a ticket with somebody in another country. That promise only holds if the person answering genuinely knows the platform — which is exactly what the Advanced certification tests. Our support team is the argument for the whole company, so we would rather build it from people we have trained and assessed ourselves.

It also means the training is worth having even if we never hire you. The certificate is yours, it is verifiable, and the skills transfer to any employer running a modern phone system.

How to start this week

  1. Enrol free. Create your Academy account — name, email, company, phone, country and a password. A minute, no payment details.
  2. Work through Basic. Six modules, in sequence — each one unlocks the next, and the knowledge check opens when you have finished the module it belongs to.
  3. Sit the Basic exam. Twenty questions, forty-five minutes, 75% to pass. Your certificate is issued immediately with its verification code.
  4. Take Advanced. Nine modules on the real portal, then the written sections and the observed practical.
  5. Open the Careers tab and apply. Pick your role, tell us when you can start, and your certificate travels with the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WOCOM Academy cost anything?

No. Both certifications are free to enrol in and free to sit. There is no charge for the material, the exam or the certificate.

Do I need experience in telecoms to enrol?

No. Basic Certification starts from the network up and assumes no prior telecoms background. Experience helps you move faster; it is not a requirement to start.

Can I apply for a job without being certified?

Not through the Academy. Applications open only once you hold the WOCOM Advanced certificate — it is the qualification the roles are assessed against, so there is no separate route around it.

How long does the internship run?

Ninety days, across the install and support teams. It is a placement length, not an application deadline — there is no closing date to race.

How long does it take to get certified?

The Basic material is about eighty minutes of lessons and the Advanced material close to four hours, plus the assessments. Most people spread that across a few evenings; progress is saved, so you can stop and pick up where you left off.

What happens after I apply?

The application goes to the WOCOM hiring team with your certificate number, score and issue date attached, and the careers page shows its status. Roles are filled as they become available, and we reply by email.

Is the certificate recognised outside WOCOM?

It is a WOCOM certification with a public verification page, so any employer can confirm it is genuine. The material — SIP, cloud PBX, routing, call quality — is standard voice engineering that applies well beyond our platform.

Start with the first module

Everything above begins the same way: one account, one module, no cost. Enrol in WOCOM Academy, or read what the certification programme covers before you commit an evening to it. Get through it and the careers page is waiting on the other side.
