What Is a MOS Score?
MOS stands for Mean Opinion Score — a standardised number from 1.0 to 5.0 that summarises how human listeners would rate the quality of a voice call. It was originally developed by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) to compare telephone codecs, but today it is the benchmark used by SIP trunk providers, VoIP engineers, and network monitoring tools worldwide to express call quality as a single, actionable figure.
A score of 5.0 is perfect — studio-quality audio. A score of 1.0 means the call is completely unintelligible. Real-world business calls live in the middle, and where exactly your calls land determines whether customers trust you or give up and call a competitor.
MOS is calculated algorithmically from three measurable network factors: packet loss, latency, and jitter. Modern SIP monitoring platforms compute this continuously on every call leg, so you do not need to survey anyone — the score is produced automatically for every call that leaves your business.
What Score Counts as Good for Business Calls?
Here is the standard industry reference for interpreting your MOS readings:
- 4.3 – 5.0 — Excellent. Callers describe the audio as clear and natural. This is the target for any customer-facing team.
- 4.0 – 4.2 — Good. Slight degradation that most callers will not notice. Acceptable for internal extensions.
- 3.6 – 3.9 — Fair. Some callers will notice clipping or slight delay. Complaints begin here.
- 3.0 – 3.5 — Poor. Callers describe calls as "choppy" or "breaking up." Staff start repeating themselves constantly.
- Below 3.0 — Bad. Calls are difficult or impossible to conduct. Customers hang up and do not call back.
The practical target for any Jamaican business running customer calls — whether you operate a contact centre in Kingston, a multi-branch retail chain, or a professional practice in Montego Bay — is 4.0 or above on every call leg, consistently. The Four Factors That Drag Down VoIP Quality in Jamaica
Poor MOS scores are almost always caused by one or more of these four network conditions:
Packet Loss
Voice travels across the internet as small data packets. If even 1–2% of those packets are lost in transit, the listener hears gaps and robotic artifacts. Packet loss above 3% makes calls noticeably bad. In Jamaica, packet loss is frequently traced to ISP congestion during peak hours (typically 6–9 pm), degraded copper local loops in older commercial districts, or overloaded business routers handling voice and data traffic with no separation rules.
Latency
Latency is the one-way delay for a voice packet to travel from sender to receiver. Anything above 150 ms one-way introduces a perceptible pause. Above 300 ms, both parties start talking simultaneously because the natural rhythm of conversation breaks down entirely. Many Jamaican businesses using international SIP providers route voice traffic to data centres in the United States or Europe, adding 80–120 ms of latency before local network conditions are even factored in.
Jitter
Jitter is the variation in packet arrival time. Even if average latency is acceptable, packets arriving out of order or in bursts cause audio to stutter. VoIP endpoints use a jitter buffer to smooth this out, but a misconfigured or undersized buffer makes the problem worse. Jitter above 30 ms is the threshold where MOS scores begin to degrade noticeably on most codecs.
Codec Choice
The codec determines how voice is compressed before transmission. G.711 produces the highest audio quality but consumes 64 Kbps per concurrent call — roughly four times more bandwidth than G.729. G.729 compresses aggressively to save bandwidth, but it also lowers your MOS ceiling: even on a perfect network, G.729 tops out around 3.9–4.0, while G.711 can reach 4.4 and above. If you run a contact centre where audio clarity directly affects sales or support outcomes, G.711 on a properly sized internet connection is worth the investment.
How to Monitor MOS on Your SIP Trunk
You cannot improve what you do not measure. These are the practical ways Jamaican businesses track call quality before problems become complaints:
- SIP trunk provider portal — WOCOM's portal exposes per-call MOS data for every completed call. Filter by date range, destination, or extension to identify whether a quality problem is isolated to one location, one carrier route, or one staff member's desk phone.
- Cloud PBX built-in reporting — Most modern cloud PBX platforms log MOS, jitter, and packet loss per call leg automatically. Review these reports weekly rather than waiting for staff to complain.
- Network monitoring tools — Platforms like PRTG, Zabbix, or SolarWinds can alert you when jitter or packet loss exceed defined thresholds on your WAN link, giving advance warning before MOS drops to a level callers notice.
- Contact centre wallboards — If you run a contact centre, displaying real-time MOS alongside queue depth and agent availability gives supervisors the data to escalate a network issue before it disrupts the entire team's session.
Quick Fixes When Your Score Drops
When call quality degrades, work through this sequence before escalating to your provider:
- Enable QoS on your router. Quality of Service rules tag voice packets with a high-priority DSCP value so they move ahead of file downloads and web traffic. Without QoS, a single large upload can collapse call quality for everyone in the building simultaneously.
- Check your jitter buffer setting. Most SIP endpoints allow you to configure buffer size. An adaptive jitter buffer adjusts automatically to network conditions and is preferable to a fixed buffer on Jamaica's variable internet links.
- Test a codec switch. If you are on G.729 and MOS is consistently below 3.8, trial G.711 on a faster connection. Conversely, if packet loss is high and you cannot immediately fix it, G.729's built-in error concealment can sometimes produce a more tolerable result on a lossy link.
- Separate your voice VLAN. Running voice and data on the same flat network allows background traffic to compete directly with call packets. A dedicated voice VLAN, combined with QoS, is the single most effective configuration change most Jamaican businesses can make today without replacing any equipment.
- Request a route change from your SIP provider. If the steps above do not move your scores, ask your provider to investigate the carrier route. Calls travel across multiple networks between Jamaica and the terminating party, and some routes carry structurally worse latency or loss than others. A reputable provider will diagnose and re-route problematic traffic rather than simply telling you the problem is on your end.
