Port Antonio’s appeal is precisely that it is not Ocho Rios. Boutique properties, villas, the marina, small restaurants, tour and river operators, and the agricultural businesses of Portland behind them — it is a smaller, quieter, more personal market.
The operational consequence is less charming. Guests book from overseas, often months ahead. Infrastructure is thinner here than along the north-west coast. And a booking enquiry that goes unanswered is not recorded anywhere, so a business can lose steadily without ever seeing the number.
Connectivity Is the First Question
In Portland this genuinely comes first. Fixed service reaches the town and the main road adequately; it thins quickly as you move up into the hills, along the coast, and out to the villa properties that make up a large part of the business base.
Because WOCOM’s service is carried over the internet rather than over a specific company’s copper, the options are wider than what happens to run past your property:
- Fixed broadband where it is reliable
- Fixed wireless where it is not
- Starlink, which for remote Portland properties has changed what is possible — a villa in the hills can now run a proper business phone service. See Starlink for business phone service
- Mobile broadband as backup, which costs little and covers the failures — see 4G/5G failover
Voice needs very little bandwidth. What it needs is a connection that is still there, which argues for two of different types rather than one fast one. The full comparison is in business phone over any connection.
The Bookings You Never Hear About
For a villa or small property, most enquiries arrive from overseas, outside your working day, from someone comparing several places at once. If the call rings out, there is no record that it happened. The business simply appears quieter than it should be.
Three fixes, in order of value:
- Answer every call, at any hour. An AI receptionist takes the enquiry, the dates, the party size and a contact number, and sends it to you by WhatsApp and email. You wake up to an enquiry rather than to nothing at all.
- Add a US or Canadian number. Overseas guests dial a familiar number instead of an international one. It rings the same phones.
- Use one business number consistently across your listings, your booking platforms and your signage — not a personal mobile that changes when staff do.
Small Teams and Seasonal Staff
A Portland property may run with three permanent people and take on more in season. A phone system built around a single reception desk does not describe that reality.
What fits: the business number on everyone’s mobile through the app, ring groups so an enquiry rings several people at once, and an AI receptionist as the backstop for everything nobody can reach. Seats can be added for the season and removed after, so you are not carrying winter capacity through the quiet months.
Weather
Portland gets the rain and it gets the storms. Communications failures here are more frequent and longer than on the south coast, and guests, staff and suppliers all need to reach you precisely when things are worst.
What to have in place before the season, not during it:
- Router, switch and any satellite equipment on a UPS
- A second connection of a different type, with automatic failover
- A pre-built storm call flow — status message, calls diverted to whoever has power and signal — activated in one step
- A current contact list for staff that does not depend on the office being open
Failover and redundancy covers the arrangements, and power outages the electrical side.
Agriculture and the Businesses Behind the Coast
Portland’s farming and produce businesses have a different requirement: coordinating people who are on land, on the road, and at market. Extensions on mobiles make internal coordination free and let customers be transferred to someone in a field without exposing a personal number. See agribusiness communications.
What It Costs a Small Operator
A three-person Portland business is looking at a small monthly cost with no equipment purchase: a business number, extensions on the mobiles the team already carry, an AI receptionist included, and a backup connection. Set against a single recovered villa booking, the comparison is not a close one.
